Epoxy Terrazzo Flooring System Installation Process
1.What is epoxy terrazzo flooring?
Epoxy Terrazzo is a seamless decorative flooring system made by combining environmentally friendly aggregates such as recycled glass, quartz, shells, and natural stone chips with solvent-free epoxy resin as the binder.
The system can be poured and installed on site or prefabricated, followed by a series of precision grinding and polishing processes to create a smooth, durable, and highly decorative surface.
As an advanced alternative to traditional cement-based terrazzo, epoxy terrazzo combines the artistic appeal of terrazzo with the superior performance of epoxy resin, offering both design flexibility and long-lasting durability.
Core Components & Process
- Aggregates: Recycled glass, quartz, shells, natural stone chips, and other decorative aggregates provide a wide range of colors, textures, and visual effects.
- Binder: Solvent-free epoxy resin replaces the traditional cement binder. After curing, it forms a dense and seamless resin matrix with excellent surface performance.
- Installation & Finishing: Epoxy terrazzo can be cast and installed on site or prefabricated in a factory. The surface is processed through multiple stages of grinding, including coarse, medium, and fine grinding, followed by polishing and the application of a transparent protective sealer.
Key Advantages
1. Seamless & Highly Decorative
Epoxy terrazzo can create large seamless surfaces without visible joints or traditional tile-like seams. Its smooth finish, rich color options, and customizable patterns provide outstanding design flexibility.
2. Durable & High Performance
It offers excellent wear resistance, compressive strength, stain resistance, and resistance to water penetration. The flexibility of the epoxy resin system can also help reduce the risk of surface cracking, providing a long-lasting flooring solution.
3. Eco-Friendly & Easy to Maintain
With a solvent-free, low-VOC formulation and environmentally friendly aggregates, epoxy terrazzo is suitable for green building applications. Its dense, non-porous surface is easy to clean and helps maintain a hygienic environment.
4. Lightweight & Lower Structural Load
Compared with traditional cement-based terrazzo, epoxy terrazzo can offer a lower overall system weight, helping reduce structural load and making it suitable for multi-story buildings and renovation projects.
Applications
Thanks to its combination of aesthetic appeal, durability, and easy maintenance, epoxy terrazzo is widely used in spaces where both design and performance are important, including:
Airports · Museums · Shopping Malls · Luxury Hotels · Hospitals · Schools · Premium Commercial Spaces · High-End Residential Projects
2.What Is the Difference Between Epoxy Terrazzo and Inorganic Terrazzo?
- Different Binding Materials: Inorganic terrazzo uses cement-based materials as the binder, making it more susceptible to cracking and water penetration. Epoxy terrazzo uses epoxy resin as the binder, offering better flexibility, higher flexural strength, excellent resistance to water penetration, and a seamless finish.
- Different Maintenance Requirements: Inorganic terrazzo generally requires regular waxing and polishing for maintenance. Epoxy terrazzo does not require routine waxing and can be maintained through regular cleaning.
- Different Environmental Performance: Epoxy terrazzo can be formulated as a solvent-free, low-VOC system, producing minimal dust during application and offering a cleaner and more environmentally friendly flooring solution.
3.Is Epoxy Terrazzo Wear-Resistant? Is It Slippery?
- Wear Resistance: Epoxy terrazzo is finely ground and fully cured, providing excellent surface hardness and wear resistance. Its Mohs hardness can reach approximately 6–7, comparable to granite. Under normal use and with proper maintenance, the flooring can typically provide a service life of 15–20 years.
- Slip Resistance: The slip resistance can be customized according to the application requirements. By adjusting the surface treatment, such as creating a matte, slightly textured finish, the wet slip resistance coefficient can reach above 0.6, helping meet common slip-resistance requirements.
4.What Applications Is Epoxy Terrazzo Suitable For?
- Commercial & Public Spaces: Shopping malls, hotels, airports, hospitals, schools, and other high-traffic areas where hygiene, durability, and aesthetics are important.
- Industrial & Laboratory Facilities: Workshops, laboratories, and other environments requiring chemical resistance and heavy-load performance.
- Residential Spaces: Villas, high-end apartments, kitchens, bathrooms, and other residential areas where a seamless, durable, and high-end decorative finish is desired. Proper waterproofing should be provided for wet areas.
5.Can Epoxy Terrazzo Be Customized with Complex Patterns?
Yes. Epoxy terrazzo offers excellent design flexibility. Different colors and aggregates, such as colored stone, glass, and shells, can be freely combined to create customized patterns and decorative effects.
It can be used for artistic inlays, intricate patterns, custom logos, and other bespoke designs. Since the decorative elements are embedded within the overall terrazzo layer, the patterns are highly durable and resistant to everyday wear.
